BATC-Housing First Minnesota Foundation Scholarships

The BATC-Housing First Minnesota Foundation is accepting 2017-2018 scholarship applications through February 10, 2017.

The 2017 BATC-Housing First Minnesota Foundation scholarship selections will give priority to those seeking to learn a construction related trade. This includes carpentry, HVAC, electrical, plumbing and others.

Applicants must:

  • Uphold at least a 2.5 GPA,
  • Be a resident of the Twin Cities Metro Area or plan to locate in the area after graduation
  • Be graduating senior in the spring of 2017 OR be an adult with a high school degree who plans to pursue a career in residential home construction

Award amounts will be determined at the discretion of a special committee.

2017-2018 Scholarship Recipients


John Jeske

John is a 29 year old resident of Minneapolis, originally from Milwaukee, WI. John's Construction experience started in his father's wood/ metal shop in his childhood home. Radial arm saws, powered planers, lathes and power sanders were in regular use. The high school John attended offered a variety of wood and metal based classes, and he took as many of them as he could.  After high school he went to college for a plumbing degree. John is currently attending Dunwoody College and will be graduating in May with an Associates Degree in Construction Management. He has chosen to return to Dunwoody College the August to start his Bachelor's Degree in Construction Management.

Martha Enzler

Martha is a Minnesota native who is currently enrolled in her first semester at Hennepin Technical College in HVAC and will be receiving her AAS degree in 2019. She has always been a self-starter who has enjoyed working with her hands. Her previous careers included working on a farm in Vermont, self-employed ceramic artist for 15 years and a short stint doing administrative work.  After realizing this last choice wasn't a good fit for her, she needed to find a career that both engaged her hands and mind. She began the HVAC program this past January and loves it so far!

Matthew Odegaard

Matthew is a student in the Northeast Metro District 916 Construction Occupations Program and is currently a senior at Park High School.  Matthew lives in Cottage Grove, Minnesota and plans to graduate this June. Matthew says that "People describe him as a hard worker." He enjoys helping his Dad remodel houses and helping neighbors fix their decks and looks forward to starting the Plumbing program at St. Paul College this fall.



Mitchell McGhee


Mitchell has recently moved with his family to Minnesota where he is a student at Stillwater High School and is enrolled in the Northeast Metro 916 Construction Occupations Program. Mitchell will graduate this July.  In his application, Mitchell said that he loves the construction program he's in and has developed a passion for building homes. Mitchell hopes to become an electrician and will start the Chippewa Valley Electrician Program this Fall.

Sam Wigfield

Sam graduated from Irondale High School in June, 2016. He was also a student in the Northeast Metro District 916 Construction Occupations Program where he received an award for "Outstanding Student" in 2016.  A Roseville resident, Sam's goal is to become an HVAC technician and he is in his first year at Century College.
